Video: King Krule, ‘Dum Surfer’

King Krule

We’re calling it now — King Krule’s “The OOZ” is about to be the most unpredictable album of the year. After the crawling crooner “Czech One” dropped last month, its spoken-word drift over a simple Rhodes arrangement suggested a more minimalist foil to Archy Marshall’s typically pithy jazz guitar and coughs of compressed drum loops. With the new single “Dum Surfer,” however, we imagine the phlegmatic shouts and long-drawn blues of the 23-year-old Londoner’s earlier work to have been not so much tamed as it is corralled into the cohesive shadows of some dark urban corner. Before watching the video, one might think of a drunken Langston Hughes dream-boogieing over the uneven cobblestones of some dim-lit colonial city, with instrumentation that recalls the nocturnal menace of Massive Attack and PJ Harvey at her most … trippy? The video features a band of undead being observed in a bar by fringe folk (who are probably also dead). King Krule’s forthcoming 19-track album is out Oct. 13 via XL Recordings/ True Panther Sounds.
