Singer-songwriter Kathryn Barr is back casting SPELLES, releasing her second single of 2017 under her nom de tune. “Teach Me How to Pray” is a chunk of tent-revival electro-gospel that will give any Bishop Briggs single a run for its soulful circuitry. “I think I was in my kitchen and I started singing the backing vocals out of nowhere,” the songwriter says. “I immediately sang them to [collaborator Luc Laurent], who started playing bass to it and we pretty much came up with the basic song structure on the spot. It was one of those rare songs that came together really quickly, so it was exciting.” SPELLES emerged in late 2014 with the single “Bird in a Cage” (which had a cameo in “Pretty Little Liars”) and is currently wrapping up work on a Sonny DiPerri-produced new EP, “Skeleton Coast I.”
