The new single from SPELLES is a soulful acknowledgment of the adage “no pain, no gain” — “Light Me on Fire,” Kathryn Barr sings, seems the only way to turn her demons to ash. It’s the latest strong turn and the third single from SPELLES’ forthcoming second EP, “Skeleton Coast I,” due in February. Thematically, the five-song release answers the question: How is Los Angeles like a shipwreck? The title, it turns out, was inspired by the stretch of shipwrecks and animal bones along the coast of Namibia in southwest Africa, and how that landscape parallels her life in L.A. “I developed a lot of anxiety, depression, and health issues when I moved to the West Coast after college and it felt like the perfect title to represent those experiences,” Barr says. “There’s also something really spooky and primal about the sound of it, which are elements I like to play with in my music.”
