Stream: Lone Kodiak, ‘Someone Else’s Future’

The sense of melancholy and nostalgia in the cinematic music of Lone Kodiak is not something the L.A. trio has manufactured for clicks and giggles. Its threads can be traced back to the time singer-guitarist Dainéal Parker and bassist Daniel Alden spent in Portland and their days in the post-hardcore band Emberghost. The band were local favorites and on the rise when keyboardist and co-vocalist Sarah Jennings died from brain cancer. Parker and Alden eventually migrated to L.A., teamed up with drummer Andrew Smith and spent the past couple of years exploring expansive, emotional music, often with guest vocalists.
The trio formally introduced themselves last year in interesting fashion — the “Ladies We Love” covers EP with some artfully chosen songs (Lorde, Daughter, FKA Twigs, Maria Taylor, Agnes Obel) all done in the trio’s painterly fashion. Next week brings Lone Kodiak’s formal debut, the EP “Feet in the Water.” Produced by Johnny What and featuring Alex Rhodes as guest vocalist, the five-song release couches the past in hopeful grandiosity. “Are we lost if we have no idea where we are?” Parker wonders in the latest single, “Someone Else’s Future,” a song about that helpless feeling you’re stuck in a life that’s not your own. Rhodes answers in the chorus, “Oh, bury the ashes and go / It is time, it is time.”
