L.A. quartet Dear Boy released the lush single “Cold Spell” last December, and while not specifically a holiday song, it’s romantic and wintry, a big sonic hug for those who might be separated from their loved ones during the season. “We love Christmas songs,” frontman Ben Grey says, “but we felt that the melancholy shade of the music is underrepresented.”

The video for the song, made by Grey, Ryan Sanders and Andrew Crawford, is an interesting piece of performance art — the quartet standing statuesque on the beach under umbrellas for all of the song’s 4 1/2 minutes. (Who flinches first, you wonder?) Making it was harder than it looks, the band says. Plus, in the style of old television hosts like Mitch Miller and Lawrence Welk, Dear Boy invites viewers to follow the bouncing ball. Says Grey: “It has always been a dream of mine to appear in a Lawrence Welk sing-along.”

With new music on the way in the new year, Dear Boy also just announced a January headlining date at the Troubadour.
