The Pixies played long, hard and deep (into their catalog) on Wednesday night at the Hollywood Palladium. The band — originals Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering, along with Paz Lenchantin — varied the dynamic through their two-hour set, the main part of which ended with a cover of Neil Young’s “Winterlong.” In all they played 34 songs, nine from the two albums they have released since their reunion, 2014’s “Indie Cindy” and 2016’s “Head Carrier.” The biggest crowd reactions, though, were reserved for the familiar songs from their 1988-91 albums.

Eagles of Death Metal preceded the headliners, with frontman Jesse Hughes proving himself a true rock ’n’ roll showman. Throughout the set Hughes sang and high-fived with the crowd (as close as the photo pit and barriers would allow), communicated his love to family and friends offstage and at one point had the entire crowd sing “Happy Birthday” to Colin Hanks. They performed a slew of their most well-known hits, including a cover of David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream.”

Chicago’s the Orwells, whose third album “Terrible Human Beings” came out early this year, kicked off the night, slightly tamer than usual but with lead singer Mario Cuomo still dancing erratically around their small section of the stage in a velvety tracksuit.
