Video: Thee Commons, ‘Camisa Al Reves’

In the video for “Camisa Al Reves,” off 2017’s “Paleta Sonora,” Thee Commons journey back to a VHS-tinted East L.A. circa 1991, setting their self-described “chunti” music to the re-imagined quinceañera of video maker Andrew Vasquez’s cousin Ruby. Quinceañeras are a milestone, a celebrated rite of passage in Latin culture, like a bat-mitzvah or Sweet 16 but with more coordinated dance routines. While shooting court poses at Hollenbeck Park in Boyle Heights, the directors had to compete with four other actual quinceañera shoots contending for that magic moment. The plot thickens during the party scene, as two boys vie for Ruby’s attention on the dance floor. A fight breaks out, and suddenly actual wrestlers stand-in in for the boys as they fight for Ruby’s heart. Who will claim the victory (and did this really happen at Ruby’s party)?

Last month, Thee Commons released a new double single, “El Jale, Vol. 1,” with the songs “Alitas” and “Dr. John.” The trio is prepping a new album, “Discodelica,” due out in spring.
