There’s nothing more depressing than sitting in a Benihana stoned and all alone on Valentine’s Day. The Frights get that. Instead of gifting us with flowers this year, the San Diego surf-punks bestow upon us “Valentine’s Sux,” marking their debut for Epitaph Records. The aptly named single covers all of the typical lovelorn woes with witty lyrics like, “It’s hard to concentrate, someone tells me ’bout their date / f*cking hell Jenny, nobody cares!” This combined with a catchy melody creates the perfect just-got-dumped anthem to sing-along to, no matter the season.
“‘Valentine’s Sux’ was really fun to write mainly because I was in the middle of writing our next record,” says vocalist/guitarist Mikey Carnevale. “I’d been on that every day for a long time, so it was a good break to write something funny. Is this what is feels like to be Weird Al? Just constantly happy? So sick.” The Frights have clearly mastered the art of the tease with this one-off track. Beyond this, they are working on the follow-up to their 2016 sophomore album “You Are Going To Hate This.” Until then, ditch your box of chocolates.
