Some Sims-like animated nightmare people get to work selling self-help books in the Corey Watson-directed video for “Abyss,” a song taken from the Dustin Lovelis full-length, “Been Hit Before,” released last August by Friendship Fever. With soothing harmonies coasting around this gently persuasive pop number, Lovelis was inspired by his favorite ’70s and ’80s experimental pop artists to explore a colorful palette of sounds and loosen the reigns on structure. “It’s the weirdest record I’ve ever made,” he says, “but it’s also got the most pop sensibility. I like that battle of pop music being suffocated by weird chords and recording tricks.”
