Interpol announced this morning that their sixth album, “Marauder,” will be out Aug. 24 via Matador. The announcement came in conjunction with a press conference in Mexico City (video here, strange moment at 24:00) The album, started before the band’s recent 15th anniversary tour and finished after, includes the single “The Rover,” a post-punk rager of which Paul Banks said. “In the context of the batch of songs that we put together, it’s probably the most punchy and direct, immediate rock song we have. … It’s a nice re-emergence for us to come out with a sort of tight-fist, quick, succinct banger.”

Notably, the album cover art is a historic 1973 photo by Garry Winogrand of Attorney General Elliot Richardson resigning after refusing President Nixon’s orders to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox, who at the time was investigating the Watergate scandal. “A lot of being accountable has to do with being honest,” Banks said of the lyrics and of the album art in the announcement.

Interpol also announced a tour that includes an October date at the Hollywood Bowl. Ticket info below.
