People never seem to mind when a famous singer shows up at their house party. But when he brings a creepy friend? That’s where it gets weird.

And throughout the video for ASHRR’s second single “Sometimes,” it stays weird, thanks to director Keith Musil (who has helmed videos for the likes of Twin Shadow, Fol Chen, Tennis and Grizfolk), singer Steven Davis and puppeteer David Beach’s sweater-vested creation. For 4 1/2 minutes, you won’t know whether to squirm or smile.

As for ASHRR, they are a new trio combining the talents of Davis and songwriters/multi-instrumentalists/producers Josh Charles and Ethan Allen. All have impressive resumés, but those who know Davis as a swing music crooner who has sung with big bands will be most surprised at how well he fits doing analog synth-based art-pop. (In 2017, Davis released a Charles-produced collection of ’80s covers.)

“Sometimes” comes advertised as spun from Berlin-era Bowie, not unlike LCD Soundsystem. Allen’s guitar riffs, the rubbery beat and Davis’ playful, existential foreboding conspire to make the track perfect for any house party.
