The Hollywood Bowl has announced its summer season for 2019, jam-packed with great performances from the rock, indie, classical, jazz, pop and soul worlds, all under the bright stars and spectacular light show (plus, in many cases, fireworks) of the venue.

John Legend will host the Opening Night of the season with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Nile Rodgers and CHIC will do the honors for this year’s July 4 Fireworks Spectacular. And Earth, Wind & Fire will host the Fireworks Finale.

Festival highlights include the Playboy Jazz Festival, Reggae Night XVIII and the 30th annual MARIACHI USA.

Rock, indie and crossover acts include the Who, the return of Vampire Weekend; the Roots; Heart, Joan Jett and Elle King doing a triple bill; and Chrissie Hynde, Natalia Lafourcade and Cyndi Lauper accompanied by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Notable rock/indie shows also include Death Cab for Cutie, Car Seat Headrest, Chromeo, Gary Clark Jr., Lord Huron, Shakey Graves, Yola, Toro y Moi, Noname, Leon Bridges, Rhye, Café Tacvba, Ben Harper, Neneh Cherry, Marco Antonio Solis, Violent Femmes, La Santa Cecilia, Phoenix, Gipsy Kings, Las Cafeteras, (recent Grammy winner) Cécile McLorin Salvant and Michael Kiwanuka.

Classic pop, rock, blues, soul and contemporary jazz acts include L.A. Phil’s Creative Chair for Jazz Herbie Hancock, Gladys Knight (with the Kingdom Choir from the Duke and Duchess Meghan Markle of Sussex’s royal wedding), Buddy Guy, Chaka Khan, Dianne Reeves, Charlie Musselwhite, Jimmy Vaughan, Lee Ritenour, Ivan Lins Quartet with Big Band, Barry Manilow (with the L.A. Phil orchestra), Tony Bennett, Santana, the Doobie Brothers, Booker T’s Stax Revue, R+R=Now, the Christian McBride Big Band, Dead & Company, Hootie and the Blowfish, Barenaked Ladies and an ABBA tribute.

Broadway fans will enjoy this year’s fully-staged production of Sondheim and Lapine’s “Into the Woods” and nights featuring Kristin Chenoweth and Hugh Jackman, as well as the annual “Sound of Music” sing-along, complete with a cosplay costume contest.

For the film fans, John Williams will introduce the annual “Maestro of the Movies,” featuring his movie scores performed by the L.A. Phil, conducted by David Newman. The third rendition of  Marcus Miller and Reggie Hudlin’s Black Movie Soundtrack III as well as live score-synced-to-film performances for “Jurassic Park,” “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and “An American in Paris” are also sure to delight.

And not to be outdone, the orchestral-focused performances of the season include Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” with puppetry by London’s Blind Summit Theatre, Stravinsky’s “Petrushka,” Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique,” Beethoven’s Ninth and world premieres of L.A. Phil commissioned works by Laura Karpman, Caroline Shaw and L.A. Phil’s Creative Chair John Adams, the latter titled, “Must the Devil Have All the Good Tunes?” as a part of the orchestra’s ongoing centennial celebration.
