Indie-rock sophisticates Fell Runner debuted in 2015 with a self-titled album full of head-spinning complexities that somehow didn’t distract from its emotional core. The quartet — guitarists Steven van Betten and Gregory Uhlmann, bassist Marcus Högsta and drummer Tim Carr, all of whom lend vocals and harmonies to the proceedings — were influenced by their studies of West African music with Ghanaian drum master, Alfred Ledzekpo, at CalArts. The rhythms underpinning all they do fuse their songs with a distinct zeal.

Fell Runner return this week with the new single “Come Home,” a straightforward (for them) pop-soul song pleading for the return of a loved one, complete with ticklish guitar parts and sky-high falsetto in the chorus. With the song comes the news that Fell Runner’s sophomore full-length, “Talking,” will be released in June via the coffee start-up YES PLZ (which also publishes a zine and releases music). The quartet is their first signing.

The album was tracked live in Carr’s living room and mixed by Sean O’Brien.
