Premiere: Beach Bums, ‘I Don’t Kno’

Los Angeles collective Beach Bums are as impossible to pigeonhole as they are to ignore.
Since 2017, the L.A. outfit has released a full-length and three EPs with an arresting mix of styles ranging from punk-, garage- and surf-rock to metal to pop to hip-hop to trap. That 2017 full-length was aptly titled “Everything.” Naysayers would call it erratic; champions of the band would call it eclectic. Their attitude, forged by playing wild backyard parties to kids with diverse tastes, is: “If it fits with our lifestyle, and it’s honest … We’re already doing everything, why not do something else as well?”
On July 26, Beach Bums — the core quartet features singer-guitarist Jonathan Horsley, drummer-rapper Keanu Harvin (who produces), bassist Elijah G. Alamo and keyboardist Joe Contreras — will release the new album “Years.” They describe it as less aggressive and more melodic, yet no less concerned with the roller-coaster of ennui and hope their fellow millennials ride every day.
The latter condition permeates the lo-fi folk-rock track “I Don’t Kno.” It’s a dog-eared two-minute Polaroid of indecision and malaise, and if you’re looking for answers you won’t find them here. Just don’t burn the house down.
