Not only do Beach Bums premiere the wild video for their new single “Shrug” in today’s edition of Buzz Bands LA’s QUARANTUNES, they share their lockdown secrets. Like arguing with each other “about who’s the cutest.” It’s your call …
THE LATEST FROM BEACH BUMS
In their young career, L.A. Beach Bums have switched up musical styles like kids rifling through a toy box; in fact, they profess to be happiest in the land of “no genre.” They’re already hard at work on a follow-up to 2019’s “Years” and have hooked up with the revamping L.A. label Lolipop Records for the ride. The first single from the braintrust of Jonathan “Jawntang” Horsley, Elijah G. Alamo and Joe Contreras is “Shrug,” out Friday. It’s an agitated and vaguely eerie bedroom-pop song that sounds like it’s crawling at the walls to escape said bedroom.
“Shrug” comes with a spooky/gory video directed by Zach Rabago. “We and Lolipop were all at the label compound one night brainstorming ideas,” Jawntang says. “I had thought of this idea where all my band members are trying to kill me, and succeed. It was a pretty funny thought, and everyone was game. Wyatt Blair, who works for Lolipop, threw out the idea that it would be cool to pair the killing scenes with slow-motion performance shots in a dark room. With those two ideas in mind, we hit up our friend, Rake (Zach Rabago), to film the video. … It was super fun because we got to get real creative with the lighting and how each shot was filmed.”
Here’s the premiere of the video:
HOW ARE YOU HOLDING UP AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MANAGE THE ‘STAY AT HOME’ EDICT?
Jawntang: Writing non-stop… (and eating, LOL). This whole thing is kind of a blessing in disguise. Before quarantine, I was battling through a lot of personal things. Since we’ve all been locked in, I’ve had a lot of time to think about these things which helped me get really inspired to write.
Eli: Holding up fine, still bummed we couldn’t play the shows we had lined up. Getting day drunk and crashing on CBD gummies, then arguing with the Bums about who’s the cutest.
Joe: Slowly going crazy. Skating in my backyard and recording in my basement every day.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO WHEN THIS IS OVER?
Jawntang: I really wanna get back on the road and play again. It’s kind of the best reward after being inside so much. Also, I wanna get out of the city and travel in general.
Joe: Being allowed in nature again and possibly planning a camping trip somewhere special.
Eli: The next one.
ANYTHING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS PLAYLIST?
Joe: These are songs I like to listen to while doing my usual day job, they help keep me focused.
Eli: Shuffle on …
Jawntang: Our music taste is all over the place. Just listen! We want it to be that way for you too …
