“Parallelogram” is the debut album from Asi Fui, who like Long Beach compatriots WARGIRL seem to vibrate on a different frequency. Asi Fui’s elastic rock-funk-soul is equal parts atmosphere and groove, psychedelia with an adventuresome spirit and jam-band chops.

The album is the work of singer-bassist Tatiana Velazquez, guitarist Miguel Vasquez, drummer Ryan Reiff and keyboardist Jason Connelly (who has departed the band since its June release). It was recorded at Long Beach’s Jazzcats Studio with Crystal Antlers’ Jonny Bell. Reiff is the former drummer in Ikey Owens’ Free Moral Agents — in fact, everybody in Asi Fui crossed paths at one time or another with the late Owens, who besides his own exploits mentored many in the Long Beach scene.

The single “Matador” is exemplary of Asi Fui’s spirit, alternately mesmerizing and (owing to Vasquez’s solo) dynamic. Experiment, stretch, repeat.
