For the next single from the Growlers, we can thank … Spandau Ballet?

Yes, it’s true. The architects of “beach goth” cite the ’80s new wavers as part of the inspiration for “Natural Affair,” released today. It’s the title track of the Growlers’ sixth full-length. The album is the follow-up to the Julian Casablancas-produced “City Club,” released in 2016, and this time singer Brookes Neilsen and guitarist Matt Taylor teamed up to do the production.

“A lot of our songs were coming out on the darker, more sentimental side, so we decided to make something more upbeat,” Taylor explains. “We all took a break, watched a documentary on Spandau Ballet, and wrote this riff that sounds a bit like ‘The Groove Line’ by Heatwave. More disco and energetic, just trying to keep it funky.”

The Growlers, currently on a seven-country, 54-date tour, say the new album will arrive in the fall.

By the way, a third night has been added to this year’s Beach Goth Halloween shows at the Palladium.
