Stream: Derde Verde, ‘Waking the Dream’

Derde Verde

For a decade, Derde Verde has been the on-again, off-again project of singer-guitarist Dylan McKenzie and bassist Jonathan Schwarz. When they’ve been on — not often enough, as they’ve released but four EPs during than span — they are mandatory listening. Derde Verde crafts expansive, evocative soundscapes that fall somewhere in the realm of psychedelic rock and atmospheric pop. In L.A., where it’s easy to get lost in the band shuffle, they are hidden gems.

On Friday, Derde Verde released the new single “Waking the Dream,” the lead track from (stop the presses!) the full-length album “Slow Light.” The tune reveals the duo’s more subdued side; the melody worms its way into your head like a lullaby while McKenzie delicately reflects a yearning based on a transatlantic romance. The Red House Painters come to mind.

“Slow Light,” the follow-up to Derde Verde’s “Meander Belt” EP, was produced by Tim Carr and Gregory Uhlmann of emerging L.A. rock luminaries Fell Runner and mastered by Philip Shaw Bova (Feist/Andy Shauf). The album comes out this fall.
