Whoever said “Life is like a bowl of cherries” should have a chat with L.A. quartet Livingmore.

“You only love it when the fruit runs dry,” Alex Moore sings on the band’s new single “Dead Fruit,” a powerful and slightly acidic bite of spacey neo-grunge. If it tastes like regret, well, that’s the point, according to guitarist Spencer Livingston. “Sometimes we don’t appreciate things until they are gone,” he says. “We felt like our last single ‘Sleepy Boy’ and ‘Dead Fruit’ both seem to live in the same dark mystical world together, so Nomad Eel Records is going to be distributing 7-inch vinyls with both of those songs.”

The new tune, which has been a favorite in Livingmore’s live set, was a full-band effort. “Our drummer Mike Schadel started playing this trippy-sounding loop one day, and we kinda just started jamming on it. Alex and myself each slowly carved out our little parts over time that revolve around [Rodrigo Moreno’s] bass line, the loop and Mike’s drums.” The quartet recorded the song at their home studio before taking the tracks to Josiah Mazzaschi at the Eagle Rock studio the Cave for the mix.

In the meantime, Livingmore has been working on songs for a new album. Their full-length debut “OK to Land” came out in 2018, an album that grew their sound substantially from their more folk-rock beginnings. This year’s singles indicate they’re going big.

“Dead Fruit” is officially out on Friday.
