L.A.’s Starcrawler made themselves right at home on Saturday night, turning in a typically dynamic, theatrical performance at the Fonda Theatre in support of their new album “Devour You,” which came out last month.
Speaking of devouring, the crowd ate it up, from the slack-jawed headbangers in the front row to the nodders and foot-tappers in the back.
The theme seemed to be “red” on stage. Lead singer Arrow de Wilde wore her usual blood-stained rags and tank top and guitarist Henri Cash sported a full country-style suit adorned with red roses (also on brand with their album cover). They started their set with “Bet My Brains” off their new album, as well as “Toy Teenager” and their single “She Gets Around.” Their performance was wild yet well-choreographed, as the band made their way through each song with different antics.
Starcrawler played “I Love LA” from their 2018 album and their cover of “Pet Sematary” as their fans sang along. They crowd-surfed and caused a ruckus, but nothing too alarming. Starcrawler is a great band to see if you want to feel the rush of chaotic energy without the danger of a scary mosh pit.
The night started off with Liily, another a band from Los Angeles, who exploded into their set and ran through a half-hour of heavy power chords and dancey guitar riffs led by singer Dylan Nash, who gave an awe-inspiring performance.
Skating Polly, a three-piece from Oklahoma City dubbed “American ugly-pop,” came on soon after, sparkly and grungy as ever.
