Premiere: Small Forward, ‘Most of You’

Small Forward

L.A. mellow fellows Small Forward have made their mark with a host of home-recorded material — down-tempo psych-pop that tugs at the heartstrings and gently pulls the listener into reveries of the past. Plaintive and pretty, their DIY recordings have suffered nothing for texture and detail.

Now the trio — Rounak Maiti, Michael Stevenson and Campbell Scott — are prepping their first full-length album, and “Most of You” (out today) is the first single. It’s a wistful look back at a teenage love affair that once was “spinning out of control” but is now relegated to painful memories. They come in for a soft landing on the song’s bed of twinkling keyboards and, in the outro, Richard Feder’s mournful sax. It’s something you imagine the Flaming Lips might make if they were diarists who made music in their bedroom.

Small Forward’s self-produced album, mixed by veteran producer/engineer Jarvis Taveniere, will be out later this year.
