Video: The Undercover Dream Lovers, ‘Chardonnay’

The title of the Undercover Dream Lovers’ debut album, arriving Feb. 28, is “It’s All in Your Head.” And in the video for the new single “Chardonnay,” UCDL architect Matt Koenig clearly has lot in his head, as he wanders through the boulder-strewn desert landscape. The video was directed by Otium (who also did the video for “All You Need”) and is the latest visual accompaniment for the Undercover Dream Lovers’ so-bright-you-gotta-wear-shades synth-pop.
If you’re looking for psychedelic pop with meat on its bones, you’d best look elsewhere. Koenig’s dreamy concoctions seduce with candy-coasted synths, easy grooves and breezy vocals — background music for wherever there is sunshine. In short, when he’s singing to his long-distance love about being “stuck in L.A. … so far away,” he vows to come to the rescue — not with anything off the top shelf, but “with a cheap chardonnay.”
