L.A. duo LEAN broke out of the indie-pop pack in 2018 with their debut album “Years,” a collection of airy, shimmering tunes that sacrificed nothing for thematic heft.

After a couple of follow-up singles, Stephen Johnson and Kyle McCammon return with the new single “Killing the Sound.” They put their production toys on the shelf for this one — the acoustic track is … well, lean. It sounds like the introduction to a larger story; perhaps LEAN’s followers will get a larger picture when the duo’s EP arrives later this year.

They call the brooding, stripped-down track “an angsty middle finger to burnt bridges beyond our control.” As flip-offs go, it’s as genteel as they come.
