“I got a feeling that I wanna be there with you / Nobody else will ever do,” Maria Zardoya coos in typically breathy fashion on “Hold It Together,” the new single from the Marías.

Fans who have been waiting for a rush of new music from the soulful dream-pop quartet probably feel the same way. After making their mark with two “Superclean” EPs in 2017 and ’18, respectively, the Marías have been keeping their burners on low (unless you got excited by last year’s Britney Spears cover, and if so, why?).

Today’s release comes with the tagline that more music is coming soon. But “Hold It Together,” like most of the Marías’ work, deserved to be lingered on, even cuddled with. Zardoya explained how she and songwriter Josh Conway came up with the tune: “Josh and I started writing ‘Hold it Together’ in our van while on tour and finished it in the middle of an empty desert a couple months later. At the time the song was written, we were knees deep in nonstop touring, and all we wanted to do was slow down, enjoy each other’s company and have some time alone. As an introvert on tour and the only woman in a band, I was extremely anxious and stressed during this time. I think the song represents my inner turmoil.”

Director Bethany Vargas’ crafted the otherworldy video. “We also wanted the video to represent this as well,” Zardoya says. “Bethany’s concept captured it beautifully. The chrome balls, from my perspective, almost represented my brain. I wanted to console it and hold it, but at times, it got too much for me to bear and it spiraled out of control.”
