Ever since singer-songwriter-producer Matthew Koma launched his solo project Winnetka Bowling League in 2018, they’ve done nothing but release impossibly catchy and wryly smart pop songs.

On the heels of last year’s sophomore EP “Cloudy With a Chance of Sun,” the quartet in Feburary released the new single “CVS,” a winking tune about trying to curry favor with one’s girlfriend by buying her sweets at CVS, having a dinner of Korean food in bed and singing her sad songs on Sunday afternoon. And you know, all those things, combined with “CVS” itself, just might work.

Director Zack Sekuler’s video will put a smile on your face, unless you are hopelessly a curmudgeon. Filmed in a CVS on Sepulveda Boulevard in L.A., it features a man (played by Elisha Yaffe, featured in WBL’s “On the 5” video) agonizing over what to buy for that somebody special. (All the requirements the store’s corporate overlords requested for permission to shoot are rather hilariously checked.) The video features cameos by Hilary Duff (she and Koma were married in December) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (“Superbad”). The shopper walks in sneezing and sniffling and walks out with a prescription from Duff, a massage from Mintz-Plasse, flowers, candy and a smile. How’s that for an in-store experience?

In other Winnetka Bowling League news, the band’s bass player Maddie Jay, whose solo project is taking off, announced last week she would be departing the band. “We started this project just over a year and a half ago, and since then there have been two babies, one wedding, close to 100 shows, 15 escape rooms (undefeated), a robbery, 970 hours in the van and an immeasurable amount of favours, support and friendship,” she wrote on social media. “The decision to leave the band has been incredibly hard to make because these people have become my L.A. family. … You heard it here first — these guys are going to be huge. I’m lucky to have been there when we shared bunk beds.”

WBL, who has more new music on the way later this year, kicks off a headlining tour in April.
