The Airborne Toxic Event

In his book “Hollywood Park: A Memoir” and in his band’s accompanying album “Hollywood Park,” Mikel Jollett of the Airborne Toxic Event raises the curtain on his troubled childhood, which included being born into an infamous cult, his family’s escape from it and the long healing process that followed him into adulthood.

Director Silvia Grav’s new video for the single “Come on Out,” its narrative culled from a chapter in the memoir, follows an 11-year-old Jollett (portrayed by Jacob Sandler, who played Brad Pitt’s childhood character in the film “Ad Astra”) as he runs away from home to escape an abusive stepfather.

“I’ve never been more proud of a music video,” Jollett says. “It’s a very difficult story to tell and these child actors are amazing.” Jollett’s bandmates Steven Chen, Adrian Rodriguez and Daren Taylor are also portrayed in their boyhood by, respectively, Milo Borgh, Jeremiah Gonzalez and Bryce Patterson.

The coronavirus pandemic put a dent in the Airborne Toxic Event’s touring plans — they originally were scheduled to be doing the second of four sold-out shows at the El Rey Theatre tonight. Current plans are for TATE to headline the Greek Theatre on Oct. 9. Jollett’s memoir comes out May 5, with “Hollywood Park” the album to follow on May 8.
