■ Here’s an old folk song that starts “Oh, Nature is sick / from her heels to her hair …” that feels particularly relevant right now. It’s titled “Out of a Job,” sung by Grant Rogers in this recording from the 1966 Newport Folk Festival. He goes on to sing, “When a man has no part of the work on this Earth / and the fellow is out of a job / He starts into cussin’ the land of his birth / when the fellow is out of a job.”

That recording — and more than 17,000 others — was unearthed in exploring the Alan Lomax Archives, which last year were made free to stream by the Association for Cultural Equity. Lomax (1915-2002), the foremost music folklorist in the U.S., compiled the recordings over decades of work, some in conjunction with his father John in 1930s. So if you want to use your quarantine time to deep your knowledge of history and broaden your horizons, start exploring.

The 1933 Group, owner of 11 establishments including Highland Park Bowl, both Bigfoot Lodges, the Sassafras Saloon and the Thirsty Crow, is taking a novel approach to fundraising: They’re selling “bonds.” Essentially gift certificates, the bonds are worth $100 in future purchases, and they’re being sold at a discount for $80. More information here.

DoLA— the popular website and email newsletter that’s a virtual city guide to all things music, arts and culture — is soliciting donations for its staff. Like many outlets who depend on marketing dollars (including this site), DoLA’s revenue has plummeted to zero because of the lockdown. Their plea is simple: help us stay in business.
