Mackenzie Howe of the Wild Reeds comes out swinging on “It’s Your Mind,” the first single from her solo project Pet Dress.

“I’m gonna take my power back,” the singer-songwriter declares defiantly to start the song, before bumping into a classic rocker reminiscent of Sheryl Crow. The single, Howe says, “is about the empowerment one experiences in learning to trust yourself, after being gaslit.”

The tune was made with Grady Strange (Graydon Wenrich) and drummer Kole Sharp and produced by Mark Rains. It’s the first single from the debut Pet Dress EP, “Fear of Breakdown” (due June 12.) “Most of the songs came out of a pretty severe depression,” Howe told Billboard, where the single premiered. “I was wrestling with my purpose and the point of it all, and these songs came as a result.”

“It’s Your Mind” is officially out on Wednesday, which is Howe’s birthday.
