Rising rapper Old Man Saxon, who spent a year living in his Ford Explorer when he first moved to L.A., shares a unique perspective with Buzz Bands LA’s QUARANTUNES — the lockdown, which postponed his tour, means he gets to spend more time with his little ones. His playlist even includes some kids’ bops.
THE LATEST FROM OLD MAN SAXON
When we first met Saxon Cole Kincy — aka Old Man Saxon — he was fresh off a year-plus of living in the back of his Ford Explorer, the only “home” he could manage after moving to Los Angeles from Denver. He rapped about it on his 2016 EP “The Perils,” which was slow to gain momentum but now has enjoyed millions of online streams. His dense wordplay, rhymes and witticisms remain outside the mainstream, but he’s gained a following not only with his humor and three-piece suit demeanor, but with his tackling of serious issues such as child abandonment (he’s a rapping tortoise in “Sunday Saxon”). His recent expoits include the 2018 EP “The Pursuit,” last year’s “Goldman Sacks” EP with Cer Spence (which includes “Hasn’t Happened”) and, in December, the album “Peacock Honey.” His single “On My Own” was on HBO’s “Silicon Valley” a couple of years ago, and last year the nattily attired artist won over the panel on the Netflix program “Rhythm + Flow.” Said Snoop Dogg: “I hope that ain’t your only outfit.”
HOW ARE YOU HOLDING UP AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MANAGE THE ‘STAY AT HOME’ EDICT?
Old Man Saxon: I am surprisingly good. I had a tour canceled [he was scheduled to headline the Roxy on June 10], but part of me wasn’t ready to go on tour anyway. I kept telling people that as exciting as the tour sounds, I was really gonna miss my family a lot. I have a 2- and 3-year-old at home and I truly didn’t want to miss such a significant part of their lives. When they are this age, you could blink and miss a major moment in their life. So I’m so glad I can be with them during this time. It really is a blessing because by the time this is over and I’m able to go on tour, I’m going to be so damn sick of these dirty children. Cute is only gonna get you so far, kid. I’m gonna need you to start wiping your own ass.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO WHEN THIS IS OVER?
Old Man Saxon: I am definitely interested to see how live shows will exist after this. Are rappers gonna keep doing that thing where they throw water on the crowd? Cause that seems gross now.
Will people share blunts? Is the concept of puff-puff-pass dead?
ANYTHING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS PLAYLIST?
Absolutely! Remember that I have two kids when listening to this playlist. There is a song from the greatest kids movie ever (“Moana”). There are some lullabies in there, because I listen to the same sleepy music everyday while driving them in the car. Praying they take a nap so that me and their mom can have just an hour of time by ourselves. They also like a good rock song, so we will mosh every once in a while to the Chats. Every Friday night, we have pizza and dance to “This Is How We Do It.” And my youngest is at an age where repetition is key so she really loves “Where Are My Pajamas?”
One of my songs (“Sunday Saxon”) is in there because every time my fiancé hears it she cries. But the good type of cry because she knows everything will be fine. There is a song my fiancé made in here (“Drug Birds”), because we are a musical family and we are dope!
