Thee Sinseers

East L.A.’s Joey Quiñones and Thee Sinseers are making the old sound new again, putting a fresh face on the sweet sounds of 1950s and ’60s Chicano soul.

The band went viral in 2019 with a live performance of the single “Seems Like,” and then became one of five Southern California artists featured on the introductory sampler from Penrose Records, the new imprint founded by Daptone Records’ Gabriel Roth (aka Bosco Mann) and based in his studio in Riverside.

It’s known as the “souldies” scene, and for your next slow dance, you could hardly do worse than plopping the 45 of “Seems Like” (released in April) on the turntable. In late May, Thee Sinseers returned with the single “What’s His Name,” featuring singer and multi-instrumentalist Quiñones (who’s also a member of Thee Confidentlas and has a solo project called Barrio Joyride) at his most croontastic.

Thee Sinseers will perform Tuesday on the first of the five-day Latin Alternative Music Conference, which is being held online this year and features panels, workshops, talks and performances from more than 50 artists. [Full schedule here.]

Thee Sinseers, along with the Altons, Introverted Funk, Chrisol and Viva Mescal, will also live-stream a show on Saturday, June 13, from the Paramount to benefit Black Lives Matter and the Youth Justice Coalition of L.A. Watch their socials for streaming info.
