The only thing longer than the title of the new Illuminati Hotties song is the story behind it.

First, the title (we’ve added capitalization because we’re like that): “Will I Get Cancelled If I Write a Song Called ‘If You Were a Man You’d Be So Cancelled.’”

It’s the opening track on Illuminati Hotties’ new release “Free I.H.: This Is Not the One You’ve Been Waiting For,” coming out on Friday, which if nothing else deserves kudos for truth in advertising. Hotties mastermind Sarah Tudzin calls it a mixtape, others are calling it an album, but whatever its designation, it’s 12 spastic blasts of noise-pop spanning 23 minutes, or the approximate amount of time it would take a radio DJ to back-announce the title of the single and the release.

What it ain’t is another installment of edgy power-pop like “Kiss Yr Frenemies,” the 2018 album that propelled Illuminati Hotties to wide acclaim. “Free I.H.” will be released independently, after Illuminati Hotties parted ways with the label Tiny Engines.

That’s part of where the long story comes, and we recommend you read the extensive interview Tudzin did with Stereogum.

Meanwhile, the wildly fun video for the single was directed by Josh Beavers.

There’s a Zoom listening party for the release at 7 p.m. Wednesday; watch socials for the link.
