L.A. Witch’s forthcoming second album is titled “Play With Fire,” and on the second single the L.A. trio tackles a hot-button issue: how social-media pressures are contributing to a rise in the suicide rate among young people.

Like the album’s first single “I Wanna Lose,” it sounds ominous and soaked in reverb, as if the song were coming from the far end of a dark tunnel, beyond which lies a conflagration of three-alarm guitars. The goth-rock trio’s frontwoman, Sade Sanchez, sounds every bit the sage elder.

“‘Gen-Z’ is inspired by a series of articles mentioning the high rates of suicide amongst Gen-Z due to the pressures of social media,” Sanchez says. “At the same time I read about several music companies not doing well due to lack of interest in people to learn to play instruments. When I was a kid, music and guitar was my escape. Music was how I fought through my depressions. What will the future do to get through it? With constant pressure to be perfect and information/advertisements and brainwashing constantly being shoved in your face, you become a product of your environment. ‘Gen-Z’ is about being a slave to technology, specifically to our phones.”
