Video: Phoebe Bridgers, ‘I Know the End’

The video for Phoebe Bridgers’ “I Know the End” was filmed at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum — a necessary thing, perhaps, because it takes a big space to hold the song’s massive, cathartic, screaming finish.

The song is the closer on Bridgers’ rightfully acclaimed sophomore album “Punisher,” released in June. Its sophisticated but relatable storytelling, imbued with the wry melancholy and dark humor of the most engaging of conversationalists, unfolds on a broad sonic palette that makes “Punisher” a true long-player.

If nothing else, director Alissa Torvinen’s video for “I Know the End,” wraps many of Bridgers’ neuroses into six cinematic minutes — and, given the final scene, makes one curse the pandemic that is depriving the world of seeing the singer-songwriter do it live. Come for the symbolism, stay for the video’s final kiss.

Bridgers will be online this weekend as part of the Newport Folk Festival’s Folk On Revival Weekend. Friday’s lineup features Mavis Staples’ 80th birthday celebration, recorded last year at the Theatre at Ace Hotel.
