The Jaded Hearts ClubNic Cester (Jet) and Miles Kane (The Last Shadow Puppets), guitarists Graham Coxon (Blur) and Jamie Davis, Matt Bellamy (Muse) on bass and drummer Sean Payne (The Zutons) — brings us a quarantine-safe performance that rocks the dial. In their first full music video, they shout through their isolated balconies, mountaintops, tenements and poolsides to the Four Tops’ “Reach Out I’ll Be There.”

Davis (who ran Coxon’s Transcopic Records in the U.K. before moving to L.A.) initially brought the group together as a one-off Cavern Club-era Beatles cover band for his birthday party in 2017. The idea has since taken off with shows at SXSW, Chicago and London. Grounded from a summer U.K. tour by the pandemic, Davis and Bellamy (also in L.A.), decided to do an album dedicated to American classic soul artists, with Bellamy producing the project at Red Room Studios. “Living in L.A. it seems like no one has heard of Northern Soul,” says Davis. “We just love the story of how the north of England fell in love with American soul music even after it stopped having hits, and using that music as the soundtrack to a good night out.” Adds Bellamy, “…We eventually stumbled across the legendary live performance ‘Reach Out’ by The Four Tops in Paris in 1967 which touched a deep nerve. It was pure joy, and uplifting energy – exactly what we needed to hear during the darkest initial few weeks of lockdown so we decided to try and do a cover of it somehow with our band members spread across 3 countries.” Cester, locked down with his family in Italy, said, “It was inspiring seeing all of these performances happening on balconies across Milan. It really lifted people’s spirits, so while both recording the vocals & making the video we wanted to capture some of that unique moment in history.”

The Jaded Hearts Club’s upcoming album, “You’ve Always Been Here,” will be out Oct. 2 via Helium-3/BMG/Infectious Music (preorder here). Stream the double single, “We’ll Meet Again” (originally by Vera Lynn)/”Reach Out I’ll Be There” (originally by the Four Tops) here.
