L.A. rockers Sleeptalk craft a sleek and easily digestible mix of pop and rock boasting modern production and that timeless quality that attracts young audiences, swooning sincerity. Their new single “100x,” released last week, sounds like a song you’d take comfort in during the hangover of a very loud Warped Tour, if the Warped Tour was still a thing.

It’s the second single this year from the quintet of singer Anthony Fitzpatrick, guitarists Jason Fitzpatrick and Justin Melchor, bassist Paul McGill and drummer Tyler Kusnier, who released their debut album in 2017 and the “Desert Daze” EP last year.

The music video was shot by Brandon Wolford and opens with lead singer Anthony Fitzpatrick walking through the door to the band’s presumed rehearsal space, setting his phone on the counter and grabbing a Whiteclaw. The five-piece is performing in a studio, equipped with pianos, rack-units and everything else a group would need to put on a live show.

Musically, “100x” is a slow burn — a ballad of sorts, but not the romantic kind, as this song is about friendship. Fitzpatrick says, “Lyrically, ‘100x’ is about trying to convince your close friend that no matter how much your opinion on something might be hurtful, you are telling them because you want what’s best for them.”

It just might be Sleeptalk’s catchiest work yet. “We think it gives off the perfect blend of modern alternative pop and rock music,” Fitzpatrick says. With flowing guitar hooks and sincere vocals, “100x” feels like a goodbye and it’s appropriate for this time of year, with the summer beginning to wind down.

Earlier this year Sleeptalk released “Trouble,” which sounds very different from “100x.” From vocals to instrumentation, “Trouble” captures the other side of Sleeptalk’s sound, the electronic one.
