Ears Wide Open: LA River Crossing

Some of the best “quarantine” songs to emerge in the past six months weren’t written during the quarantine. They’re simply about isolation, longing and missing things, and they apply.

So it is with “3D,” the debut single from LA River Crossing.

“‘3D’ is a song I wrote 10 years ago for my now-wife after spending part of the summer away from each other for college,” says the author of the tune, bassist Ben Ross. “I started missing my friends and family during quarantine, and the song popped back into my head and put a smile on my face. I realized how appropos this song is to what we’re going through collectively right now. It’s tough not seeing loved ones in the same way as before, as we all try to stay safe and keep others safe during this awful pandemic.”

The band, which features former members of Grey Season, the Brevet and Work Friend (among many others), is so new that they haven’t even gotten together yet for a photo shoot. “3D” was made with each member — singer/rhythm guitarist Brandon Osorio, lead guitarist Matt Knelman, keyboardist Michael Jones, violinist Sarah Tatman, drummer David Heyman and Ross — recording parts remotely.

The result is a buoyant indie-rocker that reminds you of all the bands you had a crush on in the Aughts — especially the ones you felt were influenced by Wilco. If your summer has meant spending too much time staring at a computer, television or phone screen, you’ll like “3D” … and the prospect of hearing it — right down to Knelman’s gnarly guitar solo — in 3D.
