It must be exhausting to be Ilan Rubin. When he’s not writing songs and playing every instrument under the sun, drumming with Nine Inch Nails and Angels & Airwaves, being the youngest living artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and touring with artists like Muse, the Killers and the Used, he’s a one-man band for his solo project, the New Regime.

The San Diego native, now based in L.A., has released a new single, “The Writing On My Walls,” a song that takes pop melodies and a catchy hook, and layers in shimmering guitar riffs and heavy instrumentation turning it into a modern rock anthem. The track comes ahead of the release of a deluxe edition of The New Regime’s third full-length LP, “Heart Mind Body & Soul.” The album came out in early March, just before the pandemic scotched the New Regime’s tour with Silversun Pickups. The deluxe edition, out Nov. 13, will include previously unreleased songs, quarantine sessions and a live version of the title track.

“I’ve really tried to focus on writing multi-layered songs,” explains Rubin, who wrote and performed all songs on the album himself. “If something doesn’t have a deeper meaning that you didn’t know was there, what makes it worth more than a handful of listens?”

You can catch Rubin being inducted with the rest of Nine Inch Nails into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday, Nov. 7, on HBO. Until then, there’s no doubt that Ilan Rubin is off somewhere further implementing his rock ’n’ roll world domination.
