Alongside their announcement of signing to Pure Noise Records, San Francisco band Carpool Tunnel last week released the single “Empty Faces.” Colored by melodic West Coast indie rock, the new single confronts a very modern problem.

“We all have people from our past that you don’t really talk to anymore, but still have a strange connection to,” the band explains. “You might follow them on social media or have photos of them. You know nothing about them now, but still feel connected to them because you see them all the time.”

The digital world lays the foundation for “Empty Faces,” much as it did for the development of the band itself. Ben Koppenjan (vocals/guitar), Bradley Kearsley (guitar), Daniel Satuffer (drums) and Spencer Layne (bass) all ended up together because of an app known as “Tinder for musicians.”

Carpool Tunnel, who’ve released a slew of singles since their 2018 EP “Getaway,” cut their chops touring up and down the California coast, testing songs like “Empty Faces” in front of a crowd. Their debut album, “Bloom,” is due out sometime next year. Like their single — a touch of vintage doo-wop, power-pop guitars and modern indie-rock bite — the quartet mixes new school and old.
