Singer, songwriter and guitarist extraordinaire Brian Whelan has a knack for writing and playing timeless rock ’n’ roll songs, and as he made clear on the opening track of his 2016 album “Sugarland,” he doesn’t care a whit if you call it Americana.
Whelan, a sideman to many (most frequently, Dwight Yoakam) who has two full-lengths to his credit, this week released a new single, “Fresh.” It’s a ripper, recorded with a crew including guitarist Chris Shiflett, keyboardist Lee Pardini, bassist Jon Button, vocalist Laura Mace and drummer Luke Adams.
Better yet, it’s a charity effort, benefiting the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.
