Helen Ballentine – aka Skullcrusher – injected herself into conversations about folk artists to watch with a robust 2020. Having given up her job at an art gallery to pursue music, the native of upstate New York released an EP and a single on Secretly Canadian. The plaudits were more resounding than her understated music.

Ballentine spent last fall back on her home turf working on new material, again with collaborator Noah Weinman (of Runnner). “Song for Nick Drake,” released this week, is the follow-up to last October’s “Farm.”

“‘Song for Nick Drake’ is about my relationship to the music of Nick Drake,” Ballentine says. “It recalls moments in my life that are viscerally intertwined with his music, specifically times spent walking and taking the train. The song is really my homage to music and the times I felt most immersed in it.”
