■ Baltimore synthwave stalwarts Future Islands recently performed a set for NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concerts at the Carroll Baldwin Memorial Hall (audience-less) at their homebase. Directed by Marisa Gesualdi and mixed by Paul Mercer with Covid-19 compliance officers to keep it safe, the band played a lush, four-song set from their latest album, “As Long As You Are,” released last October on 4AD, as well as their classic favorite “Balance.” In introducing the song “The Painter,” singer Sam Herring touched on its themes of social justice: “…This is a song about how we see the world, how we paint the world, and how we can all look at the same picture and see a different thing. It’s also mainly about how art is subjective, but the way we treat people and  the way we think about human lives shouldn’t be.”

Also, watch their latest video for the song, “Born in a War.”
