“Everybody is struggling with something … The way things are right now, everything is so distorted. I don’t think anyone really knows what they’re doing or what’s going on … We’re all just floating right now,” Aroe Phoenix says at the start of her new single “See Yourself.” Then she proceeds to make it all better for about three minutes.

The song is from Phoenix’s new two-song release “Veins,” which came out last month as the follow-up to her 2020 EP “8:18.”

The bilingual singer-songwriter was born in Los Angeles, reared in Mexico and is now based in Arizona (though currently in Berlin working on new music). The phrase “smooth as velvet” comes to mind as the first chords land on “See Yourself.” Much like her previous releases, “Veins” is filled with self-assuring truths and distinct perspectives layered with plush hip-hop beats, cozy neo-soul waves and a honey-like, comforting voice that hits the soul with an unexpected optimism. Like sipping chamomile during a calm, rainy night.
