As last year stumbled to a close, all signs pointed to 2021 being the year of Jensen McRae.

The 23-year-old Woodland Hills singer-songwriter had built considerable buzz with her singles “White Boy” (2019) and “Wolves” (2020), then went viral with her homage to Phoebe Bridgers, “Immune,” released in January. That, on top of her feature on folk singer Joy Oladokun’s “Wish You the Best” and a collaboration with noted commercialists X Ambassadors, “Skip.that.party,” had McRae’s name, if not her music, in heavy rotation.

This week, the USC-schooled folk-pop artist released the new single “Starting to Get to You,” the first taste of a full-length she’ll release later this year. It’s an affecting confessional in the vein of Tracy Chapman and Dido. “‘Starting To Get To You’ is about the slow burn,” McRae says. “It’s about being friends with someone for a while and always wondering if maybe you could be something more, and then after a long time, everything just sort of falls into place and you see each other in a whole new light.”

McRae will be among the artists performing March 5-6 as part of Linda Perry’s Rock-N-Relief Livestream Concert, which features Foo Fighters, Sheryl Crow, Deadmau5, Carly Simon, Sammy Hagar, Silversun Pickups, Macy Gray, Aloe Blacc and more. Hosted by Kat Corbett, it’s on Rolling Stone’s YouTube channel and on Amazon’s Twitch channel, kicking off at noon each day.
