Don’t act like the COVID-19 pandemic is the first time you’ve felt alone. Remember being the outsider in a group of incompatible and often inhospitable people?

That’s the conceit of the new HUNNY single “Sports With Strangers.” It’s the first new music from the L.A. quartet — Jason Yarger, Jake Goldstein, Kevin Grimmett and Joey Anderson — since their 2019 debut album, “Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.” Since they got their start six-plus years ago, HUNNY have dabbled in a variety of styles, and this one checks in on the pop-punk tip.

“We were inspired by the isolation of the last year, but rather than cement it in time by literally writing off the current situation, we transposed the feeling to past real situations in which we felt the same way,” the band says. “Rather than write about the loneliness that comes from being physically separated, we were reminded of the distance that comes from spending time in a crowd that couldn’t be further intellectually and emotionally from our perspective.”

So, yeah, that post-pandemic blowout sounds great, but just remember, “I don’t wanna talk sports with strangers,” sings Yarger, who stars as the life of the party in director Logan Rice’s video.
