Lawrence Rothman’s sophomore album “Good Morning, America” arrives Friday, a sonically and emotionally vast record drawing from some of the singer-songwriter’s experiences, including coming out as non-binary to family who were unsupportive and spending much of 2020 as a gender-queer person living in rural Missouri.

Guests on the album include Lucinda Williams, Amanda Shires, Caroline Rose, Katie Pruitt, Girlpool and Mary Lattimore, artists that give even more breadth to Rothman’s avant-pop creations.

This week brought the cinematic climax in the run-up the album’s release: the video for “The Fix.”  It’s the work of Drake Doremus, a Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning director. It was filmed amid 15th-century Mediterranean ruins in Menorca, Spain.

“I first met Drake Doremus when he invited me to be in his movie ‘Endings Beginnings,’” Rothman says. “I hadn’t done very much acting, and his films are improvised with no script. There I was meeting him for the first time and being thrown into a scene with Shailene Woodley! I thought to myself the fearlessness Drake has is so inspiring — and I hope we could continue that on a video of mine one day.

“Two years later and five connecting flights from Nashville, we were on an island in Spain shooting a video together covering four eras of clothing and landscapes running around structures built in the 1400s — a whirlwind two days Drake brought an emotional visual to the song that tells the story in a poetic light.”

Says Doremus: “Collaborating with Lawrence is always a dream scenario. Their music has a power and emotionality that inspires me, and ‘The Fix’ was the perfect playground for us. I really wanted to explore the concepts of love and time existing on and in many places and spiritual realms. The idea that right person wrong time could be explored visually over the course of hundreds of years was fascinating to me. The backdrop of Menorca, Spain, gave us those visual textures to play in.”
