Stream: Mild High Club, ‘Me Myself and Dollar Hell’

We haven’t heard from self-described metaphysical listening lounge Mild High Club since the 2016 album “Skiptracing,” probably because things got busy collaborating with King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard on their 2017 release “Sketches From Brunswick East”. The wait is over now, beginning with the new single “Me Myself and Dollar Hell” and the announcement of the forthcoming album “Going Going Gone.”

The song comes with a simple message, “America, what the fuck,” Alex Brettin sings. Calling out the underlying symptoms of capitalism, Brettin explores themes of paranoia, individualism, kleptocracy, gun violence, faith and climate change all in a concise three minutes. Warm and euphoric, “Me Myself and Dollar Hell” leans into the well of 1980s Japanese City Pop melodies. Much like Masayoshi Takanaka, the song has jazzy guitar quips and ends on an accordion note. It’s soothing, idiosyncratic and euphoric despite lyrically confronting the sheep-like mentality of the masses, “Is it something in the water?”

Following the 2015 debut “Timeline” and “Skiptracing” (2016), “Going Going Gone” is Mild High Club’s first album in 4 years, releasing Sept. 19 via Stones Throw (Mild High Club’s label since 2015). Brettin worked with Grammy Award-winning producer Vicky “Farewell” Nguyen (Anderson .Paak, The Free Nationals), fellow Stones Throw artist Knxwledge, and even features local artist Winter singing in Portuguese on “A New High.” Vinyl pre-orders are available in multiple variations.
