Sam Marine is a workingman, a guy who has made a living in the service industry, and as a songwriter he pens tunes that speak to that stoicism and hustle. He worked as a solo artist until 2019, when his project blossomed into the Walks of Life, now including drummer Stamati Arakas, bassist-vocalist Kameron Biehl and lead guitarist Joe Guese.

The quartet’s new single “Here All Night,” is a lustrous, propulsive ode to Marine’s walk of life, set to the backdrop of 1980s California rock and complete with a sizzling guitar solo from Brian Whelan. It’s the latest single from “The Walks of Life,” the debut album the band will release on Dec. 3.

“I was a bartender for many years in New York City and Los Angeles,” Marine says. “‘Here All Night’ is basically my inner monologue during my last few years bartending. It was long, exhausted days; loud, hectic nights. I really tried to capture the thoughts of a professional night worker.”

It’s Marine’s take on classic rock that suggests a classic solution for relieving one’s mind of the weight of the world: a drive up the California coast. The cinematic video, directed by Anna Webber and Marine, depicts just that.

“Here All Night,” produced by Dan Long, follows a string of singles the band has released the past two years, starting, notably, with “Rockaway Girl,” when they were still just seguing from performing as Sam Marine & the Walks of Life. “That’s All Right” and “Drive My Car” followed as Marine chipped away at the project during the lockdown.

“The most difficult part of writing this album was starting right before the pandemic and not being inspired to write quarantine songs like so many people did,” Marine says. “We got shut down right after I started and I lost motivation to write, almost entirely.”

“Here All Night” is proof that Marine and his bandmates found their spark.
