On an early Saturday night, Rosie Tucker brought a mix of chill music and deadpan humor to the Echo’s stage, leaving the audience both cheering and laughing throughout the show. This was their first set in Los Angeles in nearly two years and was in support of their 2021 album, “Sucker Supreme.”

The set started out with the rapid-fire and spacey pedal-board effects song “Barbara Ann” that had the audience clapping wildly at the end. Tucker then listed upcoming tasks, “I need to tune. I need to take off my jacket. I need to chat with you. … I haven’t gone to a hairdresser since quarantine started … and only the non-famous club is allowed in here.” The compelling song “For Sale: Ford Pinto” got some in the audience to sing along.

Tucker and band slowed the music down in the middle of the set so that the lyrics, “Hope someone didn’t have to piss in a bottle to get me the thing I want,” were clearly heard by the audience. That social justice topic didn’t stop the jokes from flying. When the guitar tuning took too long for a song, “I’m turning this set into a beginner’s guitar lesson,” Tucker said. And as the set drew to an end and the musicians of the band were introduced, drummer Jessy Reed got the loudest cheers. So, in a reference back to the beginning of the set, Tucker quipped “Jessy is a celebrity, you need to go home.”

When the last chords were played out, the audience headed to the merchandise table with a line stretching back to the Echo’s soundboard.

Opening up the night were Alex Andre and VI6NNA with their jazz sounds. Alex Andre was impressed with the many Cheekface t-shirts that he saw in the audience. Valentina Zapata was brought on to guest on a song and then a smooth transition was made to VI6NNA with Alex Andre and band doing the backing. Rosie Tucker said of them, “I should have picked folks who are worse musicians on their instruments than me.”

Rosie Tucker’s set list: Barbara Ann, Airport, Dog, Brand New Beast, For Sale: Ford Pinto, Vortexas / All My Exes, Trim, Habanero, Gay Bar/Creature of Slime, Pablo Neruda, Ambrosia, Ollie.
