Catching up with some videos released in the past week: Check out the latest from Finneas, Night Talks and Particle Kid …
Finneas, “The Kids Are All Dying”
Far be it from most pop stars to stop staring in the mirror and cast their songwriting gaze upon the outside world. To do so would feel almost like a smash-and-grab on their fans’ attention. Which brings us to the Philip Andelman-directed video, filmed in downtown L.A., for Finneas’ “The Kids Are All Dying.” It’s a powerful video for the meatiest song on the songwriter’s debut long-player, “Optimist,” which came out in October. Finneas is up for best new artist at the Grammys besides the three nominations for his work on sister Billie Eilish’s album “Happier Than Ever.” And he’s doing a solo set besides performing with his headlining sister at Coachella, too.
NIGHT TALKS, “On and On”
Jacob Butler directs the whimsical video for Night Talks’ synth-pop bop, the follow-up to last year’s single “Overcome” and the second sampling from the band’s sophomore album “Same Time Tomorrow,” coming Feb. 24. The band — Soraya Sebghati, Jacob Butler and Josh Arteaga — celebrates with a show Feb. 23 at the Troubadour.
PARTICLE KID, “Someone Else’s Dream” (ft. J Mascis, Paul Bushnell & Sunny War)
“Someone Else’s Dream” introduces “Time Capsule,” the forthcoming third album from Particle Kid, the psych/folk/experimental rock project of Micah Nelson, Willie’s youngest son. The 26-track release features appearances from, among others, Sean Ono Lennon and Mickey Raphael (on the previously released “Velocirapture [The Serpent Flew]”), Jim James, Margo Price, David Ralicke, the Lovely Eggs and, yes, Micah’s father. On the new single, J Mascis, Sunny War and Paul Bushnell join in to make it, in Nelson’s words, “a fuzzed out shoegazy thing.” It’s simply killer. Hear it with director Randi Malkin Steinberger’s surveillance-styled video. Partcile Kid opens for the Flaming Lips on May 9 at the Wiltern.
