The Linda Lindas partner with fellow L.A. local Asian-Latinx American Humberto Leon in their new video released today for pop-punk-styled “Growing Up,” the title track for their debut album.
Sharing a love of fashion and multimedia, they collaborated with a highly creative team and partnered with brands Rodarte, Batsheva and Warby Parker for wardrobe stylings (led by Shirley Kurata) while keeping the DIY feel by shooting completely on an iPhone 13 Pro Max. And it’s all from the perspective of cats.
“Directing my first video for the Linda Lindas was a dream come true because I love the message and voice the girls have, and I am a true fan,” said Leon. “I was really inspired by the girls’ love of cats and wanted to take that to the next level… so the video is a conversation about turning points in their lives, all being viewed through the gaze of their cats… I worked with the girls on designing the outfits with Batsheva, styling the looks with Rodarte and Warby Parker… By shooting the video on iPhone 13 Pro Max, it created an intimacy with the video that felt like we were listening in on a day in the life of the Linda Lindas.”
The band– consisting of teens and tweens Bela Salazar, Eloise Wong and sisters Lucia and Mila de la Garza– are a unique voice in the local indie music scene, growing up together publicly through political dystopian realities, interracial strife and a historic health pandemic. Their sunny dispositions bely the anxieties they’ve had to face. “It was really hard to be in the pandemic,” said Salazar in a recent interview for Rolling Stone. “For me, it was super overwhelming, but having music really helped us a lot. Even though we had to have masks and be outside when we practiced, we were still doing something. And it kind of, at least for me, helped my mind to think about something else. It’s easier to say what you’re feeling in a song. And say it to your friends.” Lucia, writer and lead vocalist for the band’s new single, echoes the sentiment, “We get closer to each other when we write songs about what we’re feeling. We’re putting a little piece of ourselves out there to show who we are. That’s kind of scary, but it’s a lot less scary when you’ve got three other people to do it with you.”
The album, produced by Carlos de la Garza, releases digitally on April 8 (and June 3 on vinyl and CD) via Epitaph.
The Linda Lindas will play on the Late Late Show with James Corden tonight and live on Warby Parker’s Instagram tomorrow at 6 p.m. PST from Leon’s Chinese-Peruvian fusion family restaurant, Chifa, in Eagle Rock.
